Summit defeated Union Catholic in a rather unusual mercy game. Except for the 3rd inning Union Catholic’s pitchers held Summit to 1 run on 3 hits. However, in the 3rd, Summit scored 9 runs on 8 hits and one UC error.
Meanwhile, Will Hellings and Mike Competiello combined to pitch a 6 hit shutout. Hellings pitched the first 3 innings allowing only one hit. Then Hellings and Competiello switched positions. Hellings moving to 3rd and Competiello taking the mound to complete the shutout.
Except for Summit’s explosion in the third inning, it was really a pitcher’s duel..
Note: Summit (9th seed) will meet Cranford (8th seed) on Saturday in the 1st round of the Union County Tournament.
