Summit opened its season at the alway dangerous Union Catholic. Will Hellings got the starting pitcher assignment. Boy did he have great game. He faced 20 batters in the 6 innings he pitched and struck out 13 batters and allowed only 2 hits. When he left the mound after six innings the score was 4-0 and Hellings had thrown only 72 pitches. Patrick Smolyn pitched the final inning and struggled a bit, allowing 3 runs on 2 hits but preserved the win.
Summit took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Danny Isralowitz led off with a single and scored on a double by Justin Weiss. Summit made it 2-0 in the 5th when Mike Competiello led off with an inside the park home run. Two more runs were scored in the sixth. Weiss had his second doubled to start the inning and scored a single by Emory Carlson. Carlson later score the 4th
run.
