The last time Summit played Chatham in the regular season was almost a decade ago (2009). At that time, Chatham was heavily favored, but Summit prevailed in overtime. It was one of those games where the students flooded the floor after the win. It has special significance for me. My grand daughter, was visiting from Berkeley CA and wanted to see her first Summit game. With our upset win she became a lifetime Hilltopper. She returned to Berkeley High School proudly wearing all her SHS Gear.
Chatham, coming off last years state championship game, had to be the favorite. Summit fell behind by 7 in the 1st quarter and 11 points at the half. A couple of 3-pointer each by Finbar McCormick and Malcom Sidebottom, plus 11 of 12 free throws kept Summit in the game.
Summit came out for the 3rd quarter with a more aggressive game and closed the gap to 5 points. Eric Baier’s 8 point led the offence. Balanced scoring got every one in the game. The final quarter was a defensive gem as Chatham was held to 7 points.
With the game tied at 58-58, and seconds left, McCormick drove for a layup and scored to put Summit ahead with 2 seconds left. Chatham had one wild throw left and Summit had pulled of a terrific comeback
Baier (18 points), Sidebottom (12 points) and McCormick (10 points) were in double digits
