Summit has meet Scotch Plains 3 or 4 times in the last decade and this was Summit’s first victory. What a balanced victory. Summit scored 8 field goals, 8 3 pointers and 8 free throws.
Summit fell behind in the 1st quarter, but 3 3-pointers by Malcolm Sidebottom and 2 by Finbar McCormick helped Summit finish the quarter down by one point, 18-17. The Summit defense held Scotch Plains to 5 points, so the half ended with Summit on top 27-23. Treys by Shipbottom and Will Hellings allowed Summit to enter the final quartr ahead 36-33.
The fourth quarter was furious. With Summit holding a slim lead. the hilltopper’s got a huge break. Shipbottom was fouled under the hoop and was going to the foul line when Scotch Plains was called for a Technical foul. That sent Shipbottom to the line with four free throws. He drained all four gave Summit a game winning advantage.
