What a difference a day makes. Summit came from behind again, but this time they were able to make it stick.
Ben Wheeless and Jon Canpagna combined to pitch Summit to its 5th win of the season over a very tough
Delbarton team. Delbarton jumped to a 3 run lead in the second inning on 4 singles and 2 walks. Summit
garnered an unearned run when Jason Flores was walked, went to 2nd on a wild pitch and scored when the
third baseman mishandled a ground ball by Fred Luberto. Summit picked up 3 more unearned runs in the 5th .
Ben Wheeless led off with a single, and after 1 out Flores got on base via an error. With 2 out Luberto again
hit a ground ball that was thrown away allowing Wheeless and Flores to score. Brendan Reilly then doubled
to bring home Luberto with the go ahead run. At this point Delbarton's ace Loree took the mound to put out the
fire. Again the lead was short lived as Delbarton picked up 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the 5th on a
single and a home run. Jon Campagna came in to pitch the 6th inning for Summit and put Delbarton down
1-2-3. In Summit's final at bat Flores worked their ace pitcher for a walk to start the inning. Duane Dates
followed with a solid single. After a fly out to Left and a strikeout things were looking bleak. However, a wild
pick off throw allowed Flores and Dates to move to 2nd and 3rd so Delbarton intentionally walked Chellevold to
load the bases. Kyle Bennett then ripped a single scoring Flores and Dates, and when the throw got away
from the catcher Chellevold came home too. Unfortunately, the umpire called interference on Summit and
Chellevold was sent back to 3rd base. On the next play, Joe Mormak hit a hard shot at the 2nd baseman who
booted the ball. By the time he recovered Joe had clearly beaten the throw to 1st. But wait, in one of the worst
calls I have seen in a long time, Joe Mormak was called out and Jared Chellevold's run was erased for the
2nd time in one inning. In the final half inning Jon Campagna had to face the 2,3 &4 hitters for Delbarton. The
lead off hitter got on base on Summit's only error of the day, but was erased on a fine throw from Joe Mormak
to Josh Lipsey. This was followed by a strikeout and a line drive to Left that Duane Dates corralled for the
final out.
