A great streak finally came to an end. In Summit's third extra inning game this week, the breaks went against us. Jared Chellevold struggled in the first 3 innings, giving up 2 earned runs, but he got on top of his game for the remainder of regulation 7 innings. For example, during the first three innings 60% of his pitches were balls while in the final 4 innings of regulation only 32% were balls. Gov. Livingston chose to send a left-hander to the mound and that strategy seemed to work as the top part of Summit's batting order, with 3 left-handed batters, was held to only 2 hits. Duane Dates, with 3, and Jon Campagna, with 2, accounted for the 5 other hits. Down 0-2 entering the 5th inning, Summit rallied for 3 runs to grab the lead. Campagna started the inning with a single and moved to 2nd on Duane Dates' second hit of the game, a single. They advanced to 2nd and 3rd on a balk. Fred Luberto drew a walk to load the bases. With one out, Brendan Reilly singled to score both Campagna and Dates, and move Luberto to 3rd. With Chellevold at bat Coach Dietz called for a suicide squeeze. Chellevold laid down a perfect bunt to score Luberto and take the lead 3-2. Unfortunately, GL picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the 5th to tie the game. GL's Lallis singled to start the inning and stole 2nd. After a strikeout, GL's Giannotti hit a routine ground ball that was booted, putting runners at 1st and 2nd. Disaster struck when the routine throw back to the mound went wide of the pitcher and out of play. The two runners were each awarded 2 bases, and the tying run. Chellevold really bore down and struck out the next two batters. In fact, Chellevold retired the next 6 batters in order, striking out 6 of the last nine batters in regulation. Summit threatened in the top of the 8th when singles by Kyle Bennett and Campagna put a runner in scoring position, but a fielder's choice ended the threat. In the GL 8th the leadoff batter drew a walk, a bad omen. GL's Hansen sacrificed the runner to 2nd, one out. The next batter hit a deep fly to center and the runner moved to 3rd, 2 outs. The number 6 hiiter for GL was given an intentional walk, since only the runner at 3rd mattered. Another walk loaded the bases and brought up the number 8 hitter, Eric Cantagallo. Unfortunately, for Summit's hopes, he singled to left to end Summit's State Tournament.
