This was one we got away with. Mendham out hit us 7 to 3, but we escaped because they stranded 9 runners.
Through the 1st 5 innings we had exactly 2 hits, both by Kyle Bennett. But those two hits (a double and a
triple) drove in all 3 Summit runs. Two of the runners that scored were on base via the base on balls route and
the third got on by an error. Mendham threatened often but some great defense and key pitching preserved the
win. In Mendham's second inning the lead off hitter singled but a great 5-4-3 doubled play and a stikeout by
starter Jared Chellevold shut them down. In the Mendham 3rd the inning started off with back-to-back singles.
After an infield out another single loaded the bases. Quick defensive reactions prevented the 3rd single from
leading to a run. The next batter hit a sharp shot to Brendan Reilly who threw home to get the force out. A
great play by Joe Mormak dug the incoming ball out of the dirt. A hard hit shot to right field was hauled down
by Kyle Bennett to snuff out the uprising as Mendham left three runners on base. Again in the Mendham 5th
things got tense. Jared Chellevod walked the top of the order, after an initial strikeout. This was followed by 2
singles. Here again quick defensive reactions kept anyone from scoring. But the bases were loaded with only
one out. The fans were concerned since Chellevold was known to have a sore tendon in his throwing shoulder
and had already thrown almost 80 pitches. Jared managed to strike out the next batter for the 2nd out and we
thought we might make it out of the inning. Chellevold, who appeared to be tiring, walked the next two batters
on 10 pitches to force in 2 runs, leaving the bases still loaded. The next batter hit a line drive to center that
looked like a sure hit (and at least 2 more Mendham runs), but Fred Luberto made a diving catch to save the
inning. To the surprise on many, Chellevold took the mound again in the 6th. Things started badly with a
leadoff single. But Jared made a great move to first to pick off the runner, one out. A fly ball to center made it 2
outs. The next batter drew a walk, but a great throw from Joe Mormak to Ben Wheeless caught the runner
stealing to end the inning. Jason Flores came on in relief for the 7th inning and did a splendid job facing 4
batters, throwing 13 pitches only one of which was out of the strike zone. Good defense, as it often does,
spelled the difference between victory and defeat. Chellevold struck out10 in the 6 innings he workd, and
picked up the win.
