Good defense wins a lot of games and bad defense loses a lot of games. Cranford played flawless defense
and Summit had its worst defensive game of the season, committing 6 errors and numerous mistakes of
judgement. If only earned runs counted it would have been a tie game. Things began badly as the Cranford
leadoff man got on base on an error and the next batter walked. A sacrifice bunt wasn't handled properly and
the bases were loaded. The next batter hit a slow infield ground ball, but indecision about which base to throw
to allowed the runner to reach first and a run score. After two stikeouts a walk forced in the 2nd run. Summit
came storming back in their 1st, Jerad Chellevold doubled off Cranford's starter Meyer (3-0 for the season).
Kyle Bennett drew a walk and Joe Mormak singled to load the bases. Ben Wheeless proceeded to hammer a
monster double to clear the bases. After a second out, Jason Flores singled to drive in the 4th run of the
innning. Cranford, with their Number 1 ranking in jeopardy, brought in its ace pitcher, Feeley, to try to save the
game. In Summit's 3rd we picked up another run when Kyle Bennett walked, went to second on a WP and
scored on Wheeless' single. But that single was Summit's last base runner as Feeley retired the next 14
batters. Cranford picked up 4 runs in the 4th and 3 in the 5th to put the game away. Jon Campagna came on in
relief in the 6th inning, but left with 1 out in the 7th when his pitching shoulder was injured. Emlen Fischer
completed the game. Lets hope we meet Cranford again in the UCT.
