Wow, three cliff hangers in a row. Summit made two dramatic comebacks. Two runs in the bottom of the 7th sent the game into extra innings, and 5 runs in the bottom of the 10th capped off an unbelievable come-from-behind win. This win kept us from being eliminated from a chance of winning the conference. A victory at Mendhem would force a showdown game with Morris Hills. Summit grabbed an early 2-1 lead and looked like it would grow in the 2nd when Josh Lipsey, Duane Dates and Fred Luberto all singled to start the inning. Brendan Reilly lofted a sac fly to left to score Lipsey, but it was ruled that Lipsey left too early and was called out. A ground out ended a promising start. Summit Scored another run in the 4th when Dates singled, went to second on an error and scored on a Reilly single. In the 6th WE erupted for 3 runs off starter Ben Wheeless and grabbed a 5-3 lead. Summit answered with a run in the 6th when Reilly and Jared Chellevold walked and Kyle Bennett drove Reilly home with a single. To start the 7th Scott Croswell came in in relief. Unfortunately, WE tagged him for another run when the lead off batter was walked , sacrificed to 2nd , stole 3rd and came home on a perfectly executed suicide squeeze. It looked grim for Summit, down 2 in tha last of the 7th. Joe Mormak and Lipsey walked and then with 2 out pulled off a double steal to put them both in scoring position. Luberto obliged with a big double to tie the game. There was no scoring in the 8th, but WE had a man on second with 2 out when the next batter drove a hard single to center but Luberto rifled a throw from center field to the plate and Mormak made a great tag to end the inning. Many felt that was the best throw they had seen in years. Emlen Fischer relieved Croswell in the 9th and there was no scoring, but again it took a great defensive play. After 2 outs WE got a single and went to second on a wild pitch. Another single looked sure to bring the runner in, but Lipsey ran deep into left field to retrieve the ball and throw a strike to the plate. Mormak put the tag on the runner on a very close call. WE broke loose in the top of the 10th for 4 runs to grab a 10-6 lead and spread depression throughout the Summit fans. Chellevold led off the bottom of the 10th with a walk. He scored when Bennett hit a monster triple that would have cleared the fence in any park in NJ. One run was in. After a strikeout, Mormak followed with a triple of his own and another run was in. At this point WE replaced their pitcher McGuire, whose pitch count had reached an astounding 165. The new pitcher was greeted by a single from Jon Campagna to score Mormak. After Lipsey walked, Dates singled in the 4th run of the inning and the game was tied. Luberto walked and Reilly rapped a clean single to drive in the winning run. Quite a comeback. Fischer got the win in relief.
