This was the biggest win of the season. Mendham came into this game as the number 2 ranked team in Morris County, having beaten every team in the Iron Hills Conference except Parsippany, and heavily favored. Summit jumped to a 14-8 lead in the 1st quarter as John Foushee scored 7 of his 15 points. Mendham quickly closed the gap to 20-19 but a 3 pointer and a FG by Brendan Reilly helped rebuild the lead to 6 at the half. John Brown and Brian Rush each added 4 points in the 2nd quarter. The Summit fans began to hope an upset was possible. In the 3rd quarter Brian Rush picked up 6 more points, one of which was a great slam dunk that caused the crowded gym to erupt. Kai Donaldson scored 4 points to help anchor a 14 point 3rd quarter. The defense held Mendham to 11 3rd quarter points so Summit entered the 4th quarter with a 9 point lead. But that lead was short lived as a 3 and a 2 by Mendham quickly cut the lead to 4 points, and we knew we were still in a tough struggle. Things seesawed as Summit rebuilt the score to 46-39, but again Mendham fought back to get to within 3 at 48-45. Ultimately the victory hinged on free throws. John Foushee made 4 of 6 and Matt Von Klemperer sank 3 of 4 in the last few minutes to hang on to the lead. In the closing minute Mendham threw up a barrage of 3 point shots but couldn't get any to drop.
