If you didn't make the trip to Cranford because you thought Summit couldn't beat a Watchung power like Plainfield you made a very big mistake. This was the most exciting, exhilarating. heart pounding, and ultimately heartbreaking game of the year. Summit surprised 4th seeded Plainfield and led most of the 2nd half. In fact, with only about 2 minutes left we held a 55-50 lead. Ultimately our downfall was our inability to sink free throws. In the 4th quarter we were only able to sink 1 of 7 attempts. And that let Plainfield back in the game and they took advantage by sinking 3 of 4 in the final 30 seconds to grab a 1 point lead with 13.6 seconds remaining. But Summit still had one more chance. As Plainfield swarmed over Summit on the in bound pass, Brian Rush, whose 11 2nd half points had been key, had broken clear down field and the ball was relayed to him. As he took the ball to the hoop he slipped on something and lost his footing and crashed to the floor.

Plainfield got off to a fast start with a 20-13 1st quarter, and it didn't look good. Summit got back to within 5 in the 2nd quarter, on the basis of three 3 pointers by John Foushee. Summit opened the 2nd half with a 7-0 spurt to grab the lead from a stunned Plainfield. The 3rd quarter scoring was led by John Brown (with 9 points) and Brian Rush (with 6 points). So Summit started the final quarter with a surprising 4 point lead. Halfway through the quarter Plainfield closed to within one (48-47). A 3-pointer by John Brown, followed by a three pointer by Plainfield's Calhoun, made it 51-50. Baskets by Rush and Dates gave Summit its biggest lead at 55-50, and we began to believe it could really happen. But it was not to be.

Brian Rush led the Summit scoring with 17 points.
