After his heroic efforts in the Scotch Plains game, Matt
Benedetti was asked to take on the almost insurmountable task
of taming the powerful Cranford team. Unfortunately, he didn't
have his stuff today and walked the first four batters. Tyler
Hartlaub relieved Benedetti after the fourth walk.
Hartluab had more luck in finding the plate, but was hammered
for 8 hits and 10 runs. At that point the score was already 13-0
and there were still only two outs. At this juncture Brian
Dunnder took over the pitching. He immediately got the third
out and the inning mercifully came to an end. Cranford tagged
Dunnder for another 4 runs in the second inning, but it
was clear that Dunnder was beginning to find his way. Over
the final 2 1/3 innings he gave up only one hit and no runs. Summit
avoided a shutout in the 4th when Benedetti singled and
was driven in by a Monaco single. A ground ball hit by
Dunnder was booted by the shortstop allowing Monaco
to score. A third run was scored in the 5th when Bill Wheeler
and Ben Wheeless singled and a grounder by Francisco
Rojas drove in Wheeler.
The game was halted after the Summit 5th because of the 10
run rule.
