How do you out hit a team 9 to 3 and still lose by 4 runs? You only need to consider the 4th inning, which was one of those "innings from hell" that have plagued Summit this year. In the Dover 4th they scored 5 runs on 1 hit, 5 errors, 2 walks and 2 wild pitches. In the first three innings Jon Campagna had pitched probably the best three consecutive innings of the season. In those innings he threw only 24 pitches, faced only 10 batters, and in one stretch threw 12 consecutive strikes. This fine start was followed by the disasterous 4th inning. To add insult to injury, Dover picked up 3 more runs in the 5th inning to put Summit behind 8-1. Summit had grabbed a one run lead in the 3rd inning when Bill Wheeler and Josh Lipsey started the inning with back-to-back singles. Wheeler scored on a Ben Wheeless ground out. Summit, down 7 runs, began to fight back in the bottom of the 5th. Ryan Carey started things with a single. After two outs, Mike Nelson singled to drive in Carey. Wheeless got on base by an error and Campagna powered a double to left center to drive in two more runs. The 6th began promisingly. Matt Benedetti doubled to begin the inning and moved to 3rd on a WP. He scored on a fielder's choice by Wheeler. With two out Lipsey singled and Nelson drew a walk to load the bases and get the fans back in the game, but a hard hit ground ball by Wheeless was fielded successfully to end the inning.
