Summit snapped a three game losing streak with this win. Ben
Wheeless Pitched a complete game. After a shakey start Wheeless
allowed only 4 hits and no runs over the final six innings. Hanover
Park scored two runs in the first inning and things looked a little
grim. Summit was held scoreless through four innings, getting
only 2 balls out of the infield. But starting in the top of the
5th Summit finally broke out the bats. With one out Ryan Carey
singled. Then, on a 2-0 pitch, Josh Lipsey lofted a
home run to dead center field to tie the ballgame at 2-2. Wheeless
then stroked a double, but was left stranded when the inning ended.
In the sixth Emlen Fischer singled to right and went to
second when the right fielder bobbled the ball. Matt Benedetti
followed with a single to center, scoring Fischer and going to
second when the center fielder let the ball get past him. After
two strike outs, Ryan Carey singled to drive in Benedetti.
Carey was later picked off second, but he delivered the
RBI that put Summit ahead 4-2. Summit opened a 5 run lead in the
7th. Lipsey singled to lead off and Mike Nelson
tripled scoring Lipsey. Wheeless then singled (his
3rd hit of the game) scoring Nelson. Jon Campagna
was walked and Wheeless and Campagna moved to 2nd
and 3rd on a well executed sacrifice bunt by Fischer. From
there Wheeless scored on a wild pitch for the final run of the
game.
In the HP seventh, the leadoff hitter worked Wheeless
for a walk and the next batter singled to raise some fear in the
minds of the fans. But Wheeless rose to the occasion and
struck out the next three batters to seal the victory. In fact
Wheeless got strikeouts in six of the final seven outs.
It was a very strong perfomance by Summit's ace.
