Ben Wheeless pitched a full 7 innings and allowed
7 hits as he gained the win, bringing his record to (1-1). Hanover
Park (HP) jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the 1st inning as Wheeless
was tagged for two sharp hits and a pair of very hard hit fly
balls, that fortunately were hauled in by Matt Benedetti.
However he settled down and held HP scoreless for the next two
innings. Summit grabbed the lead in the 3rd inning when Mike
Nelson got on base on an error ( it should be noted that there
was some discussion as to whether he would have beaten it out
even if the shortstop hadn't put the ball in the dirt). A single
by Wheeless was followed by a booming double by Jon
Campagna that scored both runners. An unearned run by HP in
the 4th tied it up. There were no hits, but an error, a walk,
a fielder's choice and another walk led to a run and left runners
on 1st and 2nd with only one out. The inning was ended without
further damage on an unusual double play. Adam Breene's
throw to Mike Nelson caught a runner between 2nd and 3rd
A flip to Josh Lipsey resulted in the first out. While
this was going on the runner at first decided to try for 2nd base,
but an alert Lipsey ran him down for the second out. In
the Summit 4th Emlen Fischer got on base on an error, a
walk to Nick Monaco, singles by Ryan Carey and Lipsey
and a double by Wheeless resulted in 4 runs. The joy was
short lived because HP came back with 3 runs (one unearned) of
their own in the 5th. That left it 6-5 in Summit's favor. Summit
put the game away in their 5th when Kai Donaldson singled
to begin the inning, Benedetti got on with an error and
then Monaco,Carey, Lipsey, and Nelson
each hit solid singles to score a total of 5 runs.
