Summit was down 5-1 going into the bottom of the 5th but rallied
for 3 runs in the 5th and 2 more in the 7th to pull of a come
from behind win. Emlen Fischer pitched the first 5 1/3
innings and allowed only 5 hits. Unfortunately, four of them all
came in the 3rd inning when MH picked up all their runs. However,
Fischer was not completely to blame for the five run outburst.
The MH lead off hitter drew a walk and that was followed by a
single to put runners in 1st and 2nd with no out. The next batter
hit into what would have been a double play but the shortstop
dropped the ball. So instead of one on and two outs, the bases
were loaded with no outs. This was followed by three hits and
a sacrifice fly. Suddenly we were down 5-1. Other than that outburst,
MH had only one hit and no runs in the other six innings. Summit
got its first run in the 2nd when Fischer started the inning
with a single, moved to second on a ground out, took third on
a balk and scored on a Sacrifice fly by Nick Monaco. In
the bottom of the 5th Mike Nelson and Ben Wheeless
drew consecutive walks with one out. Jon Campagna then
hit a towering shot to left that just missed landing in the street
for a home run. Unfortunately it rolled into the street for a
ground rules double, so only one run was allowed to score. Fortunately,
Matt Benedetti came up with a single to drive in Campagna
and Wheeless and draw Summit to within one run. After going
down 1-2-3 in the sixth Nelson led off the 7th with a single.
With the hit and run on Wheeless put a shot between first
and second for a single that allowed Nelson to move to
third. A sacrifice fly by Fischer tied the game at 5-5.
It should be noted that Fischer was robbed of a home run
by the best catch I have seen since the UCT Cranford game last
year. With Wheeless on second Benedetti drilled
a long shot to right that would probably have been a triple, but
goes into the record book as a single since the game was over
as soon as Wheeless crossed the plate.
Jon Campagna came on in relief with one out in the sixth
(after Fischer had thrown his 100th pitch). Campagna put
the next five batters down in order and picked up the win.
