Jon Campagna got the start and pitched a fine complete
game to get the win. Ben Wheeless was missing from the
lineup with an eye infection. Campagna scattered 6 hits
and survived four Summit errors. Morris Hill followed a predictable
pattern for the first six innings. Each time their shortstop Rice,
their leadoff hitter, came to bat he singled and moved to third
by stealing bases or via passed balls. From there he scored on
a single, a passed ball, and a summit error. That was the limit
of Morris Hill's scoring in the first six innings. Summit scored
2 of its 5 runs in the 2nd inning when Matt Benedetti singled
and Nick Monaco batted him in with a double. Monaco
subsequently scored on a error by the shortstop. Summit's other
3 runs came in the 5th inning. it started when Mike Nelson
was hit by a pitch with one out. This was followed by a walk to
Josh Lipsey. Campagna helped his cause with a double
to right that scored Nelson and left runners on 2nd and
3rd. Lipsey scored when Fischer hit a ground ball
to the third baseman who decided to throw home but Lipsey slid
under the tag. Another ground ball by Benedetti scored
Campagna to complete the three run inning. In the bottom
of the 7th inning Morris Hills had its last chance. Things started
badly with a walk to Rice, but this time Rice was erased on a
fielder choice. However an error on a throw to first allowed the
hitter to wind up on 2nd base. A wild pitch moved the runner to
3rd. After a second out on a popup Morris Hills hit a ground ball
to 3rd which should have been the final out, but the throw pulled
Fischer off the bag and MH's fourth run crossed the plate.
Fortunately, Campagna rose to occasion and struck out the final
batter on three pitches to end the game.
