If it weren't for some defensive and base running mental
lapses this win would have been a lot easier. But the team came
through when the chips were down. Emlen Fischer had a rocky
start, walking the first batter, followed by three very hard hit
singles. Suddenly Fischer found his stride and proceeded
to strike out 5 of the next six batters. He held Mt. Olive hitless
until the 5th inning when a combination of walks, an error, and
the aforementioned defensive mental lapses allowed Mt. Olive to
score 5 runs on only 2 hits and turn a 6-2 Summit lead to a 7-6
Mt. Olive advantage. Summit had gained the lead on a 4 run fourth
when Josh Lipsey got on base on an error, Mike Nelson
singled and Ben Wheeless smashed a huge home run to clear
the bases. Emlen Fischer then singled and Nick Monaco
drove him in with the first of his two doubles. Following
the the semi-debacle in the Mt. Olive 5th, Summit came roaring
back with 3 runs. Jon Campagna led off with a single and
was sacrificed to second by Fischer's bunt. After Matt
Benedetti drew a walk, Nick Monaco hit his second double
of the day to drive Campagna home. A single by Brian
Dunnder scored Benedetti, and a sacrifice fly by Kai
Donaldson (pinch hitting for Tyler Hartlaub) allowed
Monaco to score. That made the score 9-7 in favor of Summit.
Fischer walked the lead off batter in the sixth and
Campagna came on in relief. He put the side down, but not
before one run (charged to Fischer) came in to make in
9-8. In the Summit 6th a single by Wheeless, a stolen base
and a single by Fischer gave Summit an insurance run. It
wasn't needed since Campagna retired MO 1-2-3 in the 7th
to nail down the win.
