This was a game that Summit dearly wanted to win, but a great 7th inning rally fell just a run short. Ben Wheeless pitched a complete game and except for a disastrous 2nd inning held the highly regarded New Providence bats in check. Unfortunately, 4 hits, 3 walks, and one error allowed NP to generate six run and establish a 7-0 lead. From that point on Wheeless didn't allow a runner beyond second base. Summit got back 2 runs in their 2nd. Matt Benedetti started off with a double and went to third on a single by Emlen Fischer. Nick Monaco hit into a fielder's choice that erased Benedetti when he tried to score from third. Then, with Fischer and Monaco on base, Brian Dunnder drove them both in with a double. No one scored through the next four innings and Summit came up to their last at bat in the 7th inning, down 7-2. Ryan Carey led off with a ground ball to third and the NP third baseman made NP's only error of the day allowing Carey to take second. After an out, Nick Monaco singled to drive in Carey. Monaco moved to 2nd on the throw. Dunnder hit another single to drive in Monaco and also went to second on the throw. A third consecutive single by Josh Lipsey scored Dunnder. Mike Nelson grounded out to advance Lipsey into scoring position. Wheeless then stroked a single to pull Summit to within one run, with the tying run on base. NP decided to bring in one of their two aces to get the last out, and he did. So a valiant rally fell just one run short.
