Summit closed out the season with a win against Parsippany,
the Iron Hills Champs. It was a very exciting game albeit not
a thing of beauty. Parsippany made six errors and Summit three.
Summit came from behind twice and then hung on to reap the one
run victory. Summit took a two run lead in the 2nd inning when
Jon Campagna, the starting pitcher, singled, and
went to second when Matt Benedetti's shot to the second
baseman was booted. Campagna scored all the way from second
when the pitcher tried to pick him off and instead threw the ball
into center field. Subsequently, a throwing error on a Nick
Monaco ground ball allowed Benedetti to score. The
lead was short lived because, with two out in the 3rd inning,
a walk and back to back home runs resulted in three Parsippany
runs. Summit tied the score in the fourth on singles by Nick
Monaco and Brian Dunnder and a fielder's choice by
Billy Wheeler. Parsippany came back with two more runs
in their 4th inning to regain a 5-3 lead. Summit tied it again
in the fifth inning. Wheeless got on via a fielder's choice.
Campagna singled and Benedetti was walked to load
the bases. Emlen Fischer hit a ball back to the pitcher
who threw to 3rd for one out. The throw to first by the third
baseman, to complete the double play and escape the inning, went
astray making Wheeless' run count. Alert running by Benedetti
allowed him to score all the way from first on the bad throw.
That tied the score 5-5. Summit went up 7-5 in their 6th inning
when, after 2 outs, Josh Lipsey and Mike Nelson where
both hit by the pitcher, Wheeless singled to drive in Lipsey
and Campagna singled to bring Nelson home. Parsippany
got back to within one when their short stop doubled and then
scored on two consecutive Summit errors when he tried to steal
third. In the bottom of the 7th things looked bad as the first
two Parsippany batters singled. But Fischer picked off
the runner at second for the first out, he then struck out the
next batter and the final batter hit into a routine 6-4 fielder's
choice. So the season ended with a victory.
Campagna and Fischer combined to handle to pitching.
Campagna throwing for the first 4 innings and the senior Fischer
handling the final three. Fischer was credited with the
win.
