Summit survived a disastrous 5th inning, five errors and
stranding eight runners to win. Emlen Fischer pitched a
complete game that was much better than the score might indicate.
Only three of PH's 8 runs were earned and Fischer walked
only one batter. In addition, he struck out six and drove in three
runs, including the winning run. Early on it looked like Summit
would win this one easily as Summit grabbed a 7-1 lead after two
innings. In the 1st inning Mike Nelson started it off with
a single and walks to Ben Wheeless and Jon Campagna loaded
the bases. A single by Fisher drove in Nelson and
Wheeless. Another single by Freshman Matt Williams brought
Campagna home and moved Fischer to third. Fischer
scored the fourth run on a wild pitch. Three more runs scored
in the second when Nelson and Wheeless were walked
and Jon Campagna hit a towering triple to left center.
Campagna's hit would have been a home run in any park in
the country but with no fences at Memorial Field it turned out
to be a triple. Campagna came home when the left fielder
threw the ball out of play. At this point PH replaced their pitcher
Carroll with Fitzgerald and he pretty much shut down the Summit
offense. In the 5th inning PH took the lead when they turned 5
singles and 2 Summit errors into 6 runs. Two of the single were
feeble swings that managed to drop in for hits and one was a clear
double play that would have ended the inning, but it hit something
in the infield and bounced over the head of Wheeless. In
the 5th inning Summit tied the score when Nelson was hit
by the pitcher and Wheeless drove him in with a double.
In the 6th inning Matt Benedetti smashed a triple and Fischer
helped win his own game with an RBI single.
