This disappointing 10 inning loss contained some good news and bad news. The good news is that Matt Bendetti came through with a terrific performance in relief, going 8 1/3 innings. Until this game he hadn't thrown a single pitch. His performance today will likely result in his seeing more pitching assignment in the future. The bad news is that Scott Croswell had to leave the field, after throwing just four pitches, with a very sore shoulder. The bad news continued when Jon Campagna was brought on to replace Croswell. Campagna finished the first inning but couldn't come out to pitch in the 2nd because of a very sore arm. It was at this point that Benedetti was called upon to shoulder the pitching burden. When you consider that he hadn't thrown all season, his performance was remarkable.

Summit had taken a 1-0 lead in the 1st on back-to-back doubles by Ben Wheeless and Campagna. But SP picked up 2 runs in their 1st. Summit tied the score at 2-2 in the 4th when Emlen Fischer got on with an error and made it to third on consecutive singles by Benedetti and Nick Monaco. He scored on a fielder's choice by Brian Dunnder. Summit grabbed a 2 run lead in the 5th when Wheeless got on with an error and scored when Campagna smashed a triple. Campagna came home when a fly ball by Fischer was mishandled by the left fielder. SP again tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the 6th inning. The Summit 7th and 8th both started promisingly when the lead off hitters (Josh Lipsey and Campagna respectively) singled but were both cut down by double plays. Summit regained a one run lead in the 9th when Monaco walked, Dunnder got on by an error and Adam Breene walked to load the bases with no one out. A sacrifice fly by Lipsey allowed Monaco to score and the Summit fans were looking forward to more runs. Unfortunately a base running mixup added a second out and no more runs scored. SP tied it up in the bottom of the 9th.

In the bottom of the 10th inning Benedetti again took the mound after having already thrown 114 pitches. Considering this was his first pitching stint that was quite a high pitch count. He walked the first two batters and was clearly running out of gas. He got the next batter to ground out, but loaded the bases by waking the next batter. The next batter hit a little blooper back to the right of the mound, Benedetti new that to prevent a run from scoring the ball had to caught. He dove for the ball in a valiant effort, but it fell just beyond his glove.
