This was a seesaw battle that was a bit of a slugfest,
featuring five home runs. Summit held two run and three run leads
and saw them disappear. Going into the bottom of the 7th inning
Summit had a one run lead, but ultimately lost this exciting game.
The game started with Josh Lipsey and Mike Nelson
drawing walks and Ben Wheeless driving in one run with
a single. Westfield answered in their1st inning with a home run,
to tie the game. In the Summit 2nd home runs by Ryan Carey
and Lipsey put Summit ahead 3-1. Westfield chipped away
at the lead with another home run in the 3rd inning and a run
in the 4th inning. Summit re-established a a three run lead in
the 5th inning when Jon Campagna got on base on an error.
Then after two outs, Emlen Fischer singled and Nick
Monaco singled to right field. The right fielder let the ball
get by him and two runs scored. Ryan Carey then singled
to drive in Monaco. Westfield began their 5th with a single and
the runner went to 2nd on errant pick-off throw. The next batter
singled to score one run. The following batter hit a double play
ball to short, but it was mishandled and all runners were safe.
A single then drove in two more runs and tie the game again. Summit
regained a one run lead (7-6) when Fischer got on base
on a fielder's choice, a single by Carey and a walk to
Bill Wheeler filled the bases. Lipsey's single got
one run across, but Summit eventually stranded three runners.
Campagna relieved Wheeless in the 7th and after
one out a Westfield home run tied the game. The next batter hit
a grounder in the hole at short that was fielded well, but the
throw went astray and the runner wound up on 2nd. After a popup
to Carey, a single drove in the winning run.
