This was a "must win" game for Summit if they
were to qualify for the State Tournament, but it was not to be.
This was the first game in which Kai Donaldson and Keyon
Smith were both available to play and they both started the
game. Unfortunately Jason Holmes was out sick. Hanover
Park jumped to a quick 5-0 start, but Summit went on a 12-0 spurt
to grab the lead. The quarter ended with Summit up by 5 points.
The 2nd quarter became a disaster as breakdowns in the defense
allowed 4 wide open shots from three point land. HP made them
all. At the same time nothing worked for Summit as they managed
only 5 points. Typical of the first half, HP hit 6 of 7 free throws
while Summit hit only 1 of 7. That 2nd quarter put Summit in a
hole from which they never recovered. But it wasn't for lack of
effort. Summit closed to within 6 mid way through the 4th quarter,
mostly on the shoulders of Jon Campagna who scored 14 points
in the 2nd half. But just as things were turning around a controversial
foul call on Campagna, followed by a technical foul on
the bench resulted in 3 made free throws by HP and the ball out
of bounds. They scored on the in bounds play. With Hp up by 10
Campagna hit a three to bring it back to a 7 point game.
But there wasn't enough time left.
Jon Campagna had his first double-double with 18 points
and 12 rebounds. it was an outstanding performance. Summit connected
on 22 of 52 shots (42%), but had a miserable day at the foul line
sinking only 2 of 9 (22%). By comparison Hanover Park sank 14
of 20 (70%).
