Elizabeth hit one of two free throws early in the 4th quarter, but that would prove to be the last point they would extract from Summit's defense. In fact over the final 10 minutes of the game Summit held Elizabeth to that single point. Field Goals by Kellogg and Bita Yektashenas got Summit to within a single point. Then, with 1:45 left, Danielle Proper scored to put Summit ahead by a point. Their first lead since early in the 2nd quarter. The final 105 seconds were unbelievably tense. Elizabeth was forced to foul a number of times in order to get over the 6 foul limit and force Summit to the foul line. The final two points of the game came on an "intentional" foul by Elizabeth with just 5 seconds left. Proper sank them both and Summit got the ball back. They ran out the clock to take home the Union County Trophy. I believe this is the first time a Summit team has ever won a Union County Basketball Championship.
Summit's women showed, yet again, that they have what it takes to come from behind and win the close games. The coaches and players can be very proud of their gutty performances. The Summit scoring was led by Danielle Proper and Marissa Kellogg with 12 and 10 points respectively. Summit hit 6 of 7 free throws while Elizabeth made only 3 of 8.
