Summit hung on to beat Hanover Park, for the second time this
year, to win the Suburban Classic Championship and remain undefeated.
Over the first three quarters Summit steadily built their lead
and entered the the final quarter with an 8 point advantage. Stephanie
Bruce led the way with 15 points in 3 quarters. This happened
inspite of the fact that HP's pressing defense caused Summit to
turn the ball over repeated without getting the ball over the
center line. At least 9 times they threw the ball away. This was
particularly surprising because this defensive weapon has usually
been employed by Summit. In fact Summit's defense was strangely
passive. At the start of the 4th quarter HP ran off 8 unanswered
points and suddenly the score was tied at 40 apiece. Summit regained
its composure and built the lead back to 46-40. After an exchange
of scores Summit remained on top with a 50-49 lead and about a
minute to play. Odette Nemes went to the foul line and
calmly sank 2 free throws to make it 52-49. HP failed to score
and Danielle Proper was fouled. She sank the front end
of a 1 and 1 to put the game out of reach at 53-49 with only seconds
to play. Stephanie Bruce led all scorers with 17 points. Marissa
Kellogg and Proper were both in double figures.
