A wonderful season of basketball came to an end in Rahway as Summit lost to Mendham in the Group 2 Sectional Finals. However, Mendham (the top ranked public school team in the State) got the scare of their lives for three quarters from a determined Summit team. Summit fell behind early 2-11, and a blow out looked possible. An 8-0 run by Summit, paced by Stephanie Bruce's 6 points, closed the gap and signalled that this would be a tough battle. Halfway through the 2nd quarter Summit pulled even at 16-16 Summit played very tough defense, but good shooting by Mendham re-opened a 4 point lead at the half. As the third quarter started a pair of FGs by Marissa Kellogg and a 3-pointer by Danielle Proper tied the score at 25 apiece. It's not right to blame referee's, but a turning point certainly occured when three blocking/charging calls, that could have gone either way, all went against Summit. The net effect contributed to Mendham's nine point lead early in the 4th quarter. In trying to play catchup, the fouls piled up on Summit and Mendham was almost flawless from the line, sinking 11 of their 12 attempts.Overall Mendham sank 16 of 20 free throws while Summit hit 2 of 3. The final margin was 16 points, but Mendham knew they had been in a heck of a fight.

Marissa Kellog led the Summit scoring with 14 points. Stephanie Bruce also scored in double digits. Offense is great, but this is a team whose great team defense all year has won a lot of games!
