If you weren't in Dover for the game you might be depressed
by the score, but there were a lot of positives to this game.
The defense was terrific. For example, Dover had 6 possessions
in the 2nd half. On 4 of the 6 possessions Dover was held to 3
plays and a punt. This was against one of the most powerful teams
in the conference. Unfortunately, Summit turned the ball over
6 times (4 fumbles and 2 interceptions). It is hard to beat a
quality team like Dover when you give them 6 extra possessions.
Two of Dover's 3 scores were the direct result of Summit fumbles
deep in our territory.
Summit really turned to its passing game as Matt Benedetti
completed 14 of 22 for 151 yards. Check out the numbers, thirteen
first downs and 226 total yards, by far our best showing.
The game got off to a bad start when Summit turned the ball
over on its 37 on its first possession and Dover scored on its
first play from scrimmage. Undaunted, Summit took the kickoff
and drove to Dover's 27 before losing the ball on downs. This
was followed by Dover's only sustained drive of the game. Even
though Dover scored, Summit's defense was very stingy, forcing
Dover to take18 plays to drive the 73 yards. Summit took the next
kickoff and drove from Summit's 8 to Dover's 15 before being stopped
2 yards short on 4th down. In the second half Summit turned the
ball over each of the first three times they had possession (an
interception and two fumbles). The last fumble was on Summit's
35 yard line and Dover capitalized on the mistake to score its
third TD. You might think Summit would be down, but they took
the next kickoff and moved from the Summit 30 to score. The drive
was highlighted by the running of Mike Nelson, a key gain
by Matt Benedetti, and two fine receptions by Bill Wheeler.
Wheeler's last catch was for 22 yards and a touchdown.
