Mendham killed us on Big plays. On their 1st play from scrimmage
Mendham's Matt Rastocky ran off a 73 yard touchdown. You will
note that Mendham only had 4 first downs. That was because they
scored on 6 big plays that didn't count as first downs. In fact,
253 of their total of 361 yards from scrimmage occured on just
5 plays. After Mendham's initial score the play was pretty even
until late in the 1st quarter when Summit recoved a fumble on
the Mendham 24. 7 plays later Matt Bendetti hit Jon
Campagna on a 7 yard touchdown pass. Sophomore Chris Slama
booted the extra point to tie the score, and give Summit some
hope. But our hopes plummeted when Rastocky took our kickoff on
the Mendham 5 yard line and ran it 95 yards for a touchdown. Mendham
missed the extra point so Summit was only down 6 points. But mid-way
through the 2nd quarter a Keith Schroeder punt put Mendham
on their 28. On the first play Rastocky did it again, going 72
yards to put Mendham up 21-7. On the kickoff Mike Nelson returned
the ball to the Mendham 31. After an incomplete pass, Nelson,
with the help of a sensational block by Campagna, ran 31
yards to score. Unfortunately, Mendham wasn't about to quit. After
a 30 yard return of the kickoff to their 40, 3 running plays by
Rastocky and a 19 yard pass put Mendham back in command.
The 3rd quarter was scoreless but Summit actually seemed to
have the edge. Late in the quarter Summit moved from their 28
and had a first down on Mendham's 15, but a fumble brought the
drive to an abrupt end. In the 4th quarter Summit had to take
some chances and went for it on 4th and 3 at midfield and were
stuffed for no gain. On Mendham's 2nd play they hit a wide open
receiver for a 47 yard touchdown. That seemed to put the game
completely out of reach. But on the kickoff Dominic Fornaro
went 95 yards for Summit's 3rd score. However, Mendham's Rastocky
added the final insult when he scored yet another touchdown on
a 43 yard run.
