Morris Hills employed a grinding running game to prevail over
Summit. They ran off 62 running plays compared to only 4 passes.
Summit got a great start when Mike Nelson took the opening
kickoff at Summit's 15 and returned it to the Morris Hills 18.
Runs by Dominic Fornaro, John Martini and Nelson
gave Summit a 1st down on the 7. On 2nd and 7 Keith Schroeder
hit Jon Campagna for a TD and Summit grabbed its first
lead of the season. Following the kickoff Morris Hills started
on their 25. Two running plays moved the ball to Summit's 23 but
there the defense stiffened and Summit got the ball on downs.
Unfortunately on the third play of the series Summit fumbled the
ball on their 45 after making the first down. Morris Hills hammered
the ball to the 1 foot line in 7 plays. With 1st down and a foot
to go the defense put up a great goal line stand and MH failed
to score. However, Summit was forced to punt from their 14 and
MH wound up with the ball again at Summit's 44. This time MH was
not to be denied. After 5 running plays MH was faced with 4th
and 10 and we thought that maybe we would escape again, but a
10 yard pass play tied the score. Following a great punt by Schroeder
MH started deep in their territory at the 11. Nine plays later
MH had a 1st down on Summit's 9. Again the defense held and MH
was forced to settle for a field goal and went up 10-7 as the
half ended.
Summit started the 2nd half by kicking off and MH started another
grinding drive from their 13 yard line. Fifteen running play later
they scored to make it a 17-7 game. On Summit's next possession
they moved the ball to a first and 10 at MH's 38. Three plays
went nowhere and on 4th and 12 a draw play caught MH completely
off guard and Fornaro gained 37 yards to the 1. On the
next play Nelson scored and Summit was back in the game.
Late in the 4th quarter MH scored again in a 9 play drive that
covered 50 yards to take a seemingly insurmountable 24-14 lead.
However, on the kickoff Nelson caught the ball on the 5
yard line and returned the ball to MH's 49. On 4th and 7 Schroeder
hit Campagna with an 11 yarder to keep hopes alive. Another
pass to Campagna covered 25 yards and gave Summit a 1st
down on the 10. After a 2 yard run by Fornaro, Schroeder connected
with Campagna a 3rd time for the TD (Campagna's
second of the day). Summit was back to within a field goal. The
on-side kickoff failed and MH was able to run down the clock to
13 seconds before relinquishing the ball for Summit's final pass
of the game that was intercepted on MH's 28.
