This was a game that Summit should have won but didn't. Summit
took the opening kickoff and ran off three first downs before
a Matt Benedetti pass was intercepted at the Mt Olive 38.
After an exchange of punts and a Mt. Olive fumble Sumiit's Keith
Schroeder hit a great punt that was downed on the Mt. Olive
2 yard line. Unfortunately, four running plays and a pass got
the ball out to their 45. At that point, Mt. Olive scored their
first TD on deep pass that covered 55 yards. This was the only
drive that Mt. Olive was able to mount all game, but it put them
up 7-0. Later in the 2nd quarter Summit was faced with a 4th down
at their 42 yard line. Mt Olive put on a full scale rush and managed
to partially block Schroeder's punt. It wobbled high and
came down in a Mt. Olive players hands on their 49. The surprised
player looked baffled for a moment trying to figure out "
what do I do now?" Most of the Summit defenders had rushed
further downfield not realizing the punt was blocked. The Mt Olive
player finally realized he actually had the ball and that there
were only a few defenders between him and the Summit goal. He
took off and scored Mt. Olive's second TD to put them up 14-0.
For the final series of the 1st half and the remainder of the
game Keith Schroeder (a ninth grader) took over at quarterback.
Benedetti had appeared to leave the field at one
point favoring his throwing arm. The 2nd half was all Summit.
After the opening kickoff Mt. Olive fumbled and Summit took over
on MO's 38. John Martini took the ball to the 27 on the
first play and Mike Nelson moved it to the 24. Martini
then took the handoff and went the final 24 yards to score. The
extra point was missed to leave the score 6 -14. After some exchanges
of punts Mt. Olive found themselves with a 4th down at their 15.
The punter rushed the kick and it slid off the side of his foot
and out of bounds on the Mt. Olive 32. A pass to Jon Campagna
took it to the 16 and a run by Martini moved it to the
11. Schroeder hit Bill Wheeler with a pass to the
2 and two plays later Martini took it in for his second
TD of the day. Summit went for the 2-point conversion in hopes
of tieing the score. The pass from Schroeder to Nelson
was complete at the goal line, but the referee ruled that the
ball didn't cross the plane of the goal line. Summit's final chance
came late in the 4th quarter when they moved the ball from their
20 to the Mt. Olive 45. Campagna leapt high to snag a pass
from Schroeder at the Mt. Olive 30, but it was called back because
of an illegal receiver downfield and the drive ended. A sad end
to a valiant effort. A long pass play and a blocked punt caused
Summit's downfall.
