Summit gained its second consecutive win by capitalizing on
six Weequahic turnovers and making key plays when they were needed.
Things didn't look good as Weequahic was able to rip off large
chunks of yardage in the opening quarter. A fumble turnover at
Summit's 10 staved off any scoring in the first quarter. In the
2nd quarter with a Weequahic first down on Summit's 19 a run,
an incomplete pass and two penalties pushed the ball back to the
34 and we thought we might dodge another bullet, but a 34 yard
touchdown run put Weequahic up 6-0. The two point try was stopped
on the one yard line. After a Keith Schroeder punt, Weequahic
took over on their 31. On their third play they turned it over
on a fumble at their 23. On Summit's first play Schroeder
hit Bill Wheeler at the goal line and Matt Slama
kicked the extra point to put Summit up 7-6. But Summit's euphoria
was short lived as Weequahic returned the kickoff 85 yards to
go back ahead 13-7.
The second half began badly as Weequahic returned the kickoff
to Summit's 48 and with two running plays was back in Summit's
endzone. The score was now 19-7 and things were definitely looking
bleak. However, Dominic Fornaro rescued our spirits by
taking the ensuing kickoff and returning it 80 yards to get Summit
back in the ballgame, 19-14. On their next possession Weequahic
again turned the ball over via a fumble on their 39 yardline.
Two Summit plays went nowhere and with 3rd and 7 Schroeder
again connected with Wheeler on a beautiful pass play
to the 2 yardline. From there Mike Nelson took it in for
the score. A two point pass to Nelson gave Summit a 22-19
lead. A great kickoff by Schroeder put Weequahic back at
their 6 yardline. They quickly ran the ball to the Summit 45 on
six plays. But here the defense held fast and Weequahic turned
the ball over on downs. Summit went nowhere and a quick kick on
third down didn't get the right bounce and Weequahic got the ball
back on their 40 with lots of time left. On first down they went
to the air, but Jon Campagna stepped in front of the receiver
to grab the ball at the Weeequahic 45. Runs by John Martini, Nelson
and Fornaro and two Weequahic penalties gave Summit a first down
on the12 yard line. On third and 14 Schroeder hit Martini
on the goal line for the clincher. On the first play of Weequahic's
next possession they went deep with a pass but Matt Benedetti
picked it off to end Weequahics hopes.
