Things started very promisingly as Summit forced West
Essex (5-1) to punt each of the first three time they had the
ball. Unfortunately, on their fourth possession Summit fell victim
to their penchant for giving up the big play. WE started their
fourth possession on the WE 34 yard line. Three plays later they
had scored. Nick Totaro had runs of 46 and 18 yards in the drive.
After an exchange of punts WE had the ball on their 23. Totaro
took just two carries to cover the 77 yards. The Summit highlight
of the 1st half occurred on the ensuing kickoff when Dominic
Fornaro took the ball on the Summit 14 and returned it for
a touchdown to close the gap to 7 points. To open the 2nd half
Fornaro returned the kickoff to Summit's 28. Ten plays
later Summit scored. It was our best sustained drive of the season.
In the drive Mike Nelson carried the ball 5 times. Karim
Wilburn caught Summit's first, of only 3 completions, for
a 21 yard gain on 3rd and 10 to keep the drive alive. Fornaro
ran the final three yards for the score. Summit went for 2 points,
and a tie, but the pass fell short. West Essex dashed Summit's
rising spirits by taking the kickoff and grinding out a 10 play
drive to build an 8 point lead. It was all over when WE returned
Keith Schroeder's next punt 60 yards for a touchdown. In
the fourth quarter, with WE's second team in the game and Keith
Schroeder at QB, Summit moved 79 yards in 8 plays for a score.
In that drive Wilburn carried 5 times and Bill Wheeler
caught a 13 yard pass on 3rd and long to keep things going. Wilburn
punched the ball over from the 1 yard line. These Statistics are,
