Summit Defeats West Morris to win Conference Title and remain unbeaten
The string of exciting Women's Lacrosse games continued unabated
this Wednesday. Summit scored first at 23:36 when Liza Hillenbrand
put in a free shot. For the next 17 minutes no one scored as Odette
Nemes and the West Morris goalie traded great saves. Then
in the next 3 minutes Hillenbrand scored twice and Cristina
Curiale scored off a pass from Alie Carey. With a 4-0
lead Summit's fans were feeling pretty confortable. Unfortunately
West Morris had other thoughts as they managed 3 goals in the
final 4 minutes of the half.to make the score an uncomfortable
4-3 at the half.
What is worse, West Morris picked up in the 2nd half where they
left off, as they scored twice in the the first minute of the
half. Suddenly West Morris had scored five unanswered goals and
had the lead 5-4. This situation existed for the next 5 minutes
until Hillenbrand scored on a free shot. Summit took the
lead again a minute later when Erin Beaumont scored following
a pass from Hillenbrand. With less than 13 minutes left
in the game West Morris scored two quick goals in the space of
24 seconds and regained the lead 7-6. About three minutes later
Summit also scored twice in less than a minute. Curiale
figured in both goals, scoring once and being credited with an
assisst on a goal by Alie Carey. With 2 minutes remaining
Hillenbrand passed to Lydia Robinson who scored
an "insurance" goal to give Summit a 9-7 lead. Now the
game entered that never-never land of the last two minutes when
no one has any idea how much more time is left to play because
the clock is kept on the field. Summit tried killing the clock
behind the WM goal, but lost the ball and allowed WM to score,
making it 9-8. Summit won the draw and resumed their stall, but
yet again WM got the ball back and as they moved rapidly down
field the clock ran out.
What a great season, 22 wins without a loss, the Conference Championship and the State Championship. It can't get any better than that!
