SUMMIT JV ICERS OFF TO A STRONG START
by Paul Sparrow
The Summit High School Junior Varsity Ice Hockey squad, under the direction of head coach Tom Simmons, posted impressive back to back wins to open the 1998-1999 season.
Sophomore goaltender Richard James led the JV squad to a hard fought 3-0 shutout of St. Peter's Prep on December 4th at Bridgewater Sports Arena. Scoreless after two periods, Summit finally connected on Junior Ned Britt's rebound early in the 3rd period. Britt opened the floodgates as Freshman Ken Bogden and Senior Rick Sadowski connected minutes later to secure the win. Senior Liza Hillenbrand and Sophomore Libby Getzendanner were stalwarts on defense in front of James.
Summit traveled to Floyd Hall to take on Montclair on December 6th and came away with an impressive 6-2 victory over a very good Montclair squad. Freshmen Craig Oliver and Bogden scored 9 seconds apart midway through the first period to erase a 1-0 deficit. Senior Mike Kull knocked in a goal near the end of the first period to increase Summit's lead. Senior John Mell, Freshman defenseman Jim Hatfield and Bogden, with his second goal and third in two games, rounded out the scoring. Freshman Doug Kramer and Sophomore Jeff Sparrow led the defensive effort as James again was solid in goal.
The Summit JV Ice Hockey team won the Union County Championship
by beating Cranford 6-2.
Tim Martin and NedBritt led the scoring with two
goals apiece and Chris Johnson and Mike Kull had
one apiece. The score was 3-2 after two periods and Summit came
on strong in the final period scoring 3 goals while shutting out
Cranford.
