One could say this game was literally thrown away. Four
errors led to 8 unearned runs and really put the game out of
reach. Dover picked up the first unearned run in the 2nd inning
to take a 1-0 lead. However, Summit came back in the 3rd to gain
a 2-1 advantage. Ryan Carey was hit by the pitcher to
start the inning and went to 2nd on a wild pitch. Jon Campagna
singled home the tying run but Campagna was erased on
a fielder's choice by Nick Monaco. A double by Paul
Krupa scored Monaco. Unfortunately, Dover picked up
2 more unearned runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning to regain
a 3-2 lead. Three singles and a walk allowed Dover to score twice
and build the lead to 5-2 at the end of 4 innings. Summit threatened
in the 5th when Campagna doubled and Monaco and
Krupa were walked to load the bases with 2 out. Sadly,
a strike out ended the inning with 3 runners stranded.
The Dover 5th inning was the final blow. With the bases loaded,
and one out, a double scored 2 runs. At this point Krupa
replaced the starter Scott Croswell. He got the next batter
to pop up to Carey for the 2nd out. The next batter hit
an infield ground ball that would have ended the inning, but
the throw to 1st base was wide and two runs scored. The next
two batters homered to make the score 12-2 and ended the game
via the 10 run rule.
It turns out that I have been spreading false information.
Coach Dietz informed me that the cut off date for the State Tournament
is Frida 5/12 not Friday 5/5. That means that there are 8 more
scheduled games before the cutoff. Obviously we must win at least
4 of those games.
Bad news about Matt Benedetti, his blood test was not
good and he will be out of action indefinitely.
