The major story of the game is the first pitching start by Freshman Paul Krupa. Krupa went the full distance giving up only 7 hits and only one earned run. Fans in the stands were searching their memory for the last time a Freshman pitcher had started a varsity game. No one could remember the last time it had happened. Krupa got very good support both offensively and defensively. Summit took a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning when Matt Williams drew a leadoff walk, Ryan Carey got on via an error, Mike Nelson drove in Williams with the first of his 3 singles, a walk to Jon Campagna and a sacrifice fly by Matt Benedetti brought Carey home. Finally, Nick Monaco singled Nelson home. Summit picked up two more runs in the 5th inning. Benedetti started things off with a single and Monaco and Rob Delgado were walked to load the bases. A pinch hit single by Chris Kaiser produced one run, and Williams was walked to force in the second run. Summit really put the game away in the 7th inning when Mike Mormak's walk was followed by singles from Williams and Carey. A sacrifice fly by Nelson drove in the second run. Campagna was walked and Benedetti singled to drive in the third run of the inning.

GL threatened in the 3rd inning with two singles, but an unassisted double play by Carey on a hard line drive put an end to the threat. GL scored their only run in the 5th inning on two singles and an error on a shot down the 3rd base line. They might have scored another run in 7th inning, but the GL runner was called out for failure to touch 3rd base.

Campagna has developed something of a record for the first five games. He has been walked 13 times and been hit by a pitcher. His on-base percentage is great, but he would like to have a few more opportunities to swing the bat. GL was 1-3 coming into this game.
