This game started with a lot of promise and then turned
sour in the bottom of the 4th inning. Summit scored runs in each
of the first four inniings. In the1st inning Matt Williams
got things started with a single and then stole second. MikeNelson
got the first of his three hits to drive in.Williams
In the 2nd inning Rob Delgado got a one out double and
Williams lofted a long sacrifice fly to the center fielder,
scoring Delgado. Hanover Park tied the score in their
part of the second when back-to-back singles and a sacrifice
bunt put two runners in scoring position. Another single completed
the damage. Summit regained the lead with 2 runs in the 3rd and
2 more in the 4th inning. In the 3rd inning a leadoff singled
by Nelson was followed by a ground rules double by Jon
Campagna, putting runners on 2nd and 3rd. A ground out by
Matt Benedetti and a sacrifice fly by Nick Monaco
allowed both runners to come home. In the 4th Ryan Carey
was walked and Nelson doubled to score one run. A single
by Benedetti drove in the second run. At this point Summit
was sitting on a nice 6-2 lead.
Then came one of those innings from hell where Hanover Park
combined 4 hits with six walks and a couple of bad choices by
the Summit defense to produce 7 runs and grab a 9-6 lead. One
bright spot in all this was the debut of Freshman pitcher
Paul Krupa. he came on in relief to get the final out
of the 4th inning. He proceeded to pitch two good innings after
that allowing no runs and two hits. Sensing a chance to pick
up a win, Hanover Park replaced their struggling starter with
strong relief. Summit was able to get only one more hit in the
last three innings, but it was beauty. Carey drove a shot
over the left field fence to lead off the 6th inning, but 9-7
was as close as Summit would get.
