The bad news is that Summit lost its opening game to
Millburn, who is considered by some to be the best team in the
immediate area. However, the news wasn't all bad. Summit played
error free defensive baseball and the infield made a number of
extremely good plays. Scott Croswell allowed only 3 hits
over the six innings he pitched. This was offset by two innings
where he had trouble finding the strike zone. The 2nd and 7th
innings accounted for 7 of his 10 walks. Matt Williams
was brought on in the 7th with the bases loaded, no outs, and
one run already in. He gave up one hit and one walk, but all
of the runs were charged to Croswell.
Millburn grabbed a 2 run lead in the 1st inning when Croswell
walked the #3 batter and the cleanup hitter pounded a towering
home run. They added another in the 2nd inning on four walks.
Croswell took charge in the next four innings and shut
down Millburn with only one hit. Unfortunately, Millburn's Dasti
silenced the Summit bats, allowing only two singles over the
7 innings. Summit got a runner in scoring position in the 3rd
inning when Mike Mormak drew a lead off walk and went
to 2nd base when Jon Campagna was also walked, but that
was as far as it got. Another scoring chance came in the 4th
inning. Ryan Carey led off with a sharp single. A fielders
choice and an error by the Millburn 2nd baseman allowed Nick
Monaco to reach 3rd base. Our best shot at a run came in the
next inning. Matt Williams led off with a single and stole
2nd base. With one out Williams stole third, but Dasti
struck out the next two batters to end the inning.
