As usual, the weather was a cruel joke at Mt. Olive.
The temperature was in the low 40s and the wind was howling.
This made it very difficult on the players and uncomfortable
for the four loyal fans who were daft enough to make the trip.
Fortunately, all were rewarded with victory. Matt Williams
started on the mound and went the distance to pick up his 3rd
win of the season. This was his best outing, allowing only 3
earned runs on 7 hits. Even more encouraging was the fact that
he gave up only 2 base on balls and struck out 5.
Summit's first run came when Mike Nelson got on base
via an error and stole 2nd. Ryan Carey laid down a nice
sacrifice to move Nelson to 3rd. Matt Benedetti brought
Nelson home with a sacrifice fly.Unfortunately, MO tied
the score on an unearned run. Summit picked up 3 more runs in
the 2nd inning. Williams led off with a single, Rob
Delgado got on with an error and Chris Kaiser singled
to fill the bases. A sharp single by Nelson drove in two
of the runners and the third crossed the place when the MO center
fielder threw the ball away. Again, MO tied the score with 3
runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning on an error, a walk and
a home run. Summit regained a one run advantage off singles by
Delgado, Nelson and Carey. After the Delgado
single Kaiser laid down a near perfect sacrifice bunt
to put Delgado in scoring position.
Mt. Olive again tied the score at 5-5 in the 4th inning with
a double and a single, but that would be their last run. Summit
manufactured a run in the 6th inning. Adam Breene got
on with a error, Delgado was walked, Kaiser moved
them to 2nd and 3rd with another good sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice
fly by Nelson scored the run. In the Summit 7th Jon
Campagna provided an insurance run with a booming home run
to left center field. Williams retired the 4,5 and 6 hitters
in order to end the game
