The season didn't end the way we hoped, but it was a
beautiful day for baseball and it was good to see Matt Benedetti
back in action after his bout with "mono". The
game didn't lack for excitement as Summit fought to the bitter
end. Down 11-6 entering the 7th inning Summit managed to bring
the tying run to the plate. With the bases loaded in the 7th,
and two out, Mike Nelson ripped a shot to left that looked
like a sure hit. but it hung up in the wind just enough to allow
the left fielder to end the game.
Summit scored two runs in the 1st inning with back-to back
doubles by Ryan Carey and Matt Benedetti. An error
by the third baseman on a ground ball by Adam Breene allowed
Benedetti to score. Another run was added in the 3rd inning
when Jon Campagna registered a two out single and stole
2nd base. The Parsippany 1st baseman missed the throw on Nick
Monaco's ground ball and an alert Campagna, recognizing
there was no one available to cover home plate, raced home to
score. One more was added in the 4th when Breene led off
with a double, the first of his 3 hits, moved to 3rd on a ground
out and scored on a wild pitch. Carey and Benedetti
started the 5th with back to back singles and advanced to
2nd and 3rd on a ground ball. Carey scored on Monaco's
ground out and Benedetti came home on a single by Breene.
A golden opportunity was lost in the 6th inning when Paul
Krupa got things started with a double and Chris Kaiser
singled. A wild pitch moved Kaiser to 2nd, so Summit had two
runners in scoring position with no outs and the top of the order
coming up. But the inning ended with no runs. Summit's last
chance came in the 7th. After one out, Monaco drew a walk
and Breene singled to move Monaco to 3rd base. After a 2nd out,
the Parsippany pitcher balked and Monaco scored. A walk
to Krupa kept things alive, and when Kaiser was
hit by a pitch the bases were loaded. But it ended there.
