Summit was eliminated from the Union County Tournament,
but not before they staged a gallant rally. In spite of the fact
that Summit lost, it was a very exciting game. Matt Williams
pitched a good game giving up only 8 hits (vs. 12 hits for
Summit) and only walking 2, but Roselle Park made better use
of their runners as they stranded only 4 (vs. 8 for Summit).
Summit was down 7-4 entering the 7th inning. Mike Nelson
started things off by getting on base when the shortstop bobbled
his grounder. A single by Nick Monaco moved Nelson
into scoring position and Nelson scored when Adam Breene
got his third hit of the game. Monaco scored on a fielder's
choice by Paul Krupa. The score was now 7-6 and the tying
run was on base. A single by Rob Delgado advanced Breene
and put the go ahead run on 1st base with two outs. But a long
fly ball to right field ended the ballgame.
Summit's first run came in the 2nd inning when Breene
doubled, Krupa singled and Delgado lofted a sacrifice
fly. They picked another run in the 3rd off a double by Jon
Campagna and a single by Monaco. Summit's next run
was in the 5th. Ryan Carey got on via an error, advanced
to 3rd on a ground out and scored on another infield grounder.
In the 6th inning Summit added a 4th run on singles by Breene,
Chris Kaiser, and Carey.
Adam Breene has been on a bit of a batting tear of
late going 3 for 4 in each of the last two ballgames.
The loss today put Summit behind the eight ball in terms on
qualifying for the state tournament. Summit now needs to win
3 of the 4 games scheduled between now and Friday night.
