There were certain heartbreaking aspects to this loss. Two calls by the umpires that seemed incomprehensible to the loyal Summit fans. Had they been called the other way this would have been a completely different ball game. In the bottom of the 4th inning Summit was down 3-1 with Ryan Carey on 3rd base and one out. Matt Benedetti hit a ground ball and as the fielder threw to 1st base Carey broke for home. Benedetti was out at 1st and the first baseman relayed the ball too late to get Carey. But wait, the umpire called Carey out, erasing a run that would have made it 3-2. However, that call wasn't as egregious as one that occurred in the Scotch Plains 4th inning. With two out the SP runner on first tried to steal 2nd. Nick Monaco rifled a perfect throw to Mike Mormak that had the runner by two steps. Mormak made the tag with room to spare ending the inning. But the umpire, inexplicably, called him safe. This call was followed by a double and a home run resulting in 3 runs that put the game out of reach.

Summit's first run came in the 2nd inning when Monaco was hit by the pitcher and Matt Williams and Adam Breene each singled resulting in a run. Summit's other two runs came in the 5th inning. Mike Nelson led off with a walk. A double down the 3rd base line by Carey put runner at 2nd and 3rd. A Sacrifice fly scored Nelson and got Carey to 3rd base. An infield out scored Carey.

Jon Campagna came on in relief of Matt Williams in the 7th inning. He threw only 5 pitches and put the side down 1-2-3. In the Summit 7th Nelson and Carey drew walks and Campagna was safe on a error by the 3rd baseman. The bases were loaded with no outs. Unfortunately, a popup, a strike out and a fly to right field ended the excitement.
