Another positive feature was the sparkling, error free, defensive play by the infield. Ryan Carey, Mike Mormak and Mike Nelson each made at least one or more great plays. At the same time Jon Campagna continued his fine defensive play at 1st base. The third positive aspect was that, down 9-0 entering the bottom of the 4th inning, Summit battled back to have the winning run on base in the 7th inning. Summit picked up it first run in the 4th inning when Campagna was walked, stole 2nd base, and went to 3rd on a wild pitch. He came home on a foul ball by Matt Benedetti. Benedetti's pop foul was caught but the WE player left the marked playing area after the catch and Campagna was awarded home plate. A 2nd run came in the 5th inning. Adam Breene hit a lead off double down the 3rd base line. He eventually came home on an error by the pitcher. WE made a pitching change in the 6th inning and it worked to Summit's advantage. Nelson started things with a single and stole 2nd base. Campagna was walked (more about that later) and Benedetti singled to load the bases. A single by Nick Monaco scored 2 runs. Breene singled to reload the bases and Chris Kaiser singled in 2 more runs. All this with no outs. Mormak laid down a good sacrifice bunt to move the two runners into scoring position. Matt Williams grounded out, and an unfortunate running mistake resulted in a double play, ending the inning. In the last of the 7th inning WE made another pitching change. Carey led off with a single , but was erased on a fielder's choice. Campagna drew his 4th walk of the game and a single by Benedetti loaded the bases with one out. Now the winning run was at the plate. Monaco was hit by a pitch and forced in Summit's 7th run. The winning run was now on base. Breene came to bat and cracked another sharp shot down the 3rd base line. Two feet left or right and the game would have been tied, but it was right at the 3rd baseman who turned a double play to end the rally and the game. There is another strange thing that has been going on that deserves mentioning. Jon Campagna was walked 4 time today. So far this season Campagna has come to the plate 32 times and has been walked an incredible 19 times and hit by the pitcher once. So ,while other regulars have 25-28 at bats, Jon has only 12 at bats. He has a fantastic on base percentage of .688, but would love to have the opportunity to swing his big bat a bit more.. |
