This probably shouldn't have been a cliff hanger but
it was. Down 48-46 with only 90 seconds left Kurt Forsyth
hit Summit's only field goal of the 4th quarter to tie the game
at 48 all. Then with 3.1 seconds left Forsyth calmly drained
2 free throws to put Summit on top 50-48. A 3-point try by Morris
Hills at the buzzer bounced off the rim and Summit kept its State
Tournament chance alive. Summit needs to win two of its next
5 games to qualify.
Things couldn't have started off any worse as Morris Hills
jumped to an 11-2 lead and Summit couldn't get anything to drop.
Jon Campagna finally got things going as he scored 6 points
during a Summit 8-0 run that got Summit back in the game. The
1st quarter ended with Summit down 13-10 and in the process Summit
had missed 4 fairly straight forward layups. The 2nd quarter
was played even with Ryan Carey leading the Summit scoring
with 7 points in the quarter. However, Summit was down 25-22
to a team that had only managed two wins all year. Summit finally
came to life in the 3rd quarter with a tough zone defense and
and some good shooting, particularly by Lamar freeman
who scored 9 of Summit's 21 points in the quarter. Summit took
a nice 6 point lead into the 4th quarter and the the Summit faithful
assumed that the worst was over. However, for the next 6 1/2
minutes Summit could manage only 3 points, all on free throws,
while Morris Hills scored 11 points to retake the the lead 48-46.
Fortunately, Forsyth's FG and FTs were enough to save
the win.
Summits mediocre shooting continued as they hit 38% of their
shots and missed 8 layups. To make matters worse Summit managed
only 10 rebounds in the entire game, half their previous average
of 20. Summit's scoring was concentrated in four players, all
of whom scored in double figures. |
