Parsippany Hills, the 2nd seed in the Group 3 Sectional, got all they could handle from a scrappy Summit team. Summit employed an aggressive zone defense throughout the game to keep the Par Hills' stars Morant and Cobb under control. It was very successful in keeping the high scoring Vikings at bay. Par Hills took a sizable early lead, 16-7, but Summit fought back to pull to within 3 points at the half. Summit exploded in the third quarter behind a hard trapping defense and 9 points from Kurt Forsyth and took a 38-31 lead as the 3rd quarter ended. The aggressive defense, however, took its toll in the foul department as many Summit players had 3 fouls. Par Hills started the 4th quarter with 2 quick baskets but Dan Dugan hit for 2 points to make the score 40-35. Four more Par Hills points made it a one point game until Jon Campagna hit a field goal to restore a 3 point advantage. With about 3 minutes left in the game Campagna got his 5th foul and had to leave the game. With Campagna out of the game, and John Martini sidelined with an ankle problem, Summit was at a big disadvantage in trying to defense 6' 7" Johnny Morant. PH quickly tied the game at 42-42 but Forsyth hit a basket and the score was 44-42. Two free throws by Par Hills and 2 by Ryan Carey left the score at 46-44. With 2 minutes left Par Hills tied it up again and then went on to hit two FTs to move ahead by 2 points with 1:27 left on the clock. A 5th foul on Lamar Freeman meant Summit had lost a 2nd starter. Four free throws by Forsyth put Summit back on top by 2, but ParHills again tied the game with about 20 sec. left. Summit had one more possession, but failed to score.

At the start of overtime PH ran off 5 straight points before Forsyth hit a field goal. Unfortunately, that was the last score he would make because he picked up a 5th foul. Now Summit had 3 starters on the bench, and its best rebounders were out of the game. Subsequently, Dan Dugan also fouled out and with only 9 players on the roster all the eligible players were on the court. Par Hills built a 58-53 lead with about 35 second left in overtime. Ted Schrafft drained a 3 pointer to raise Summit's hopes, but Par Hills ran the table by making four straight foul shots.

Par Hills scored again but Sprinzen tied it up as time was running out. In the second overtime period Sprizen drew first blood, but Par Hills scored to tie the game at 72.
