For the 3rd game in a row Summit put on a furious rally that resulted in victory. It is hard to imagine a worse start as Weequahic took a 17-5 first quarter lead. In the process they completely dominated Summit. It seemed that the only question was "what will their margin of victory be?" There was a glimmer of hope in the 2nd quarter when Summit held their own in the scoring column even though Weequahic continued to dominate the rebounding. Somehow a different team came on the court to start the 3rd quarter. Led by Kurt Forsyth's 8 points, Summit out scored Weequahic 19-10 to pull within 2 points. Mid way through the 4th quarter a pair of free throws by Ted Schrafft gave Summit it's first lead at 45-44. Lamar Freeman hit a crucial 3-pointer and Forsyth added 2 free throws and suddenly Summit was up by 5. Two baskets by Weequahic made it a 2 point game (51-49), but Forsyth hit for 2 to make the score 53-49. At this point an amazing technical foul was called on Weequahic when it was determined that they were playing with 6 men on the court. Ryan Carey hit one of two and Summit got the ball out-of-bounds. Carey was fouled and sank two free throws and later hit a fast break layup to give Summit a 10 point lead. Forsyth (9) and Carey (11) provided 20 of Summit's 29 4th quarter points. Foul shooting gave a major advantage to Summit as they were successful on 14 of 17 4th quarter attempts, and 22 of 26 overall. In contrast, Weequahic hit only 2 of 10 in the 4th quarter, and 2 of 14 for the whole game. After very poor 1st quarter shooting Summit found the range and ended with 20 of 44 (45%).
Summit now needs one victory in the next four games to clinch a berth in the State Tournament |
