This was a difficult loss to accept. A victory over Weequahic
would have ensured a winning season and the 1st quarter certainly
made that victory look very likely. The nine point lead at the
end of the quarter could easily have been 15 points if only some
layups had dropped. But still, nine points looked pretty good.
Unfortunately, the lead melted away to 3 points by half time
and became a 9 point deficit by the beginning of the 4th quarter.
With only about 3 minutes left to play the Weequahic lead had
ballooned to 12 points. Even though the odds were slim, to their
credit, Summit fought back. A 3-pointer by Dan Dugan was
followed by a basket and 2 free throws by Kurt Forsyth.
A field Goal by Jon Campagna and another 3 by Dugan
got Summit to within 6 points with less than 1 minute left. But
Summit had to keep fouling and Weequahic just made too many of
the free throws.
Kurt Forsyth led Summit with 7 rebounds and 19 points.
The game was a rough one and the refs didn't have a good grip
on things. Jon Campagna, who was manhandled the entire
game with seeming immunity on the part of Weequahic, took a blatant
blast in the face in the 3rd quarter with no foul being called.
The hit sent Jon to the deck and left him bloody and a bit groggy.
He managed to stop the bleeding and get back in the game in the
4th quarter. In another collision John Martini suffered
a badly twisted ankle and had to sit out the remainder of the
game with a ice pack on his ankle. The general consensus among
the Summit contingent was that this was, by far, the worst officiating
job they had seen all year. |
