Wow! With about 3 minutes left in the game Summit was
behind by 11 points, 49-38. Most of the fans were pretty discouraged
and were about to give up hope. The rally started with a basket
by Kurt Forsyth, but it got into high gear when Gereno
Tan drained a 3 pointer. Suddenly the lead was down to seven.
After a Weequahic free throw, Forsyth sank two from the
free throw line to make it a 6 point game. Weequahic hit half
of a 1 and 1, but Tan answered with another 3-pointer.
Now Summit was within 3 points and what had seemed impossible
was now possible. After Weequahic missed the front end of a 1
and 1, Forsyth hit a field goal to pull Summit to within
1 point. Again Weequahic missed the front end of a 1 and 1, and
Lamar Freeman (who had a great defensive 4th quarter)
scored to give Summit its first lead of the night with 25 second
left in the game. The Summit high went to a low when Weequahic
got a layup to retake the lead with only 5 seconds left in the
game. Summit hustled the ball downfield trying to find a shot.
The ball came to Tan in the corner with 1 second on the
clock. He barely got the shot off before the buzzer. We held
our breath and, swish, it went in. The large turnout of students
poured on to the floor and mobbed the happy Summit players. It
was a night to remember.
Summit got an assist from Weequahic who was able to hit only
four of its thirteen 4th quarter foul shots. For the game Weequahic
hit 14 of 27 foul shots. In contrast, Summit had a great night
at the foul stripe, hit 15 of 16. Summit hit on only 18 of 51
(35%) shots from the field but their free throw shooting made
up the difference. Forsyth led the scoring with 17 points,
Tan finished with 12 points (8 in the 4th quarter), and
Freeman picked 10 points and led the team in rebounds
with 6 |
