If you weren't at the game you might be tempted to think
it was easy, it was anything but easy. In fact Chatham led by
6 (30-24) mid way in the 3rd quarter. Stephanie Bruce
had spent most of the game on the bench in foul trouble. But
things were getting grim and she came back in the game. She picked
up 3 quick baskets and lit a fire under the whole team. With
the score 33-28 Bruce went to the line with two free throws.
She sank the first to run her consecutive free throw streak to
19. At this point your reporter blurted out "wow, 19 in
a row." The fans turned and glowered "shh!, you'll
jinx her". As luck would have it she missed the next three
and the fans began mixing some tar and feathers for yours truly.
Thank heavens she got a new streak started and I was off the
hook. Going into the 4th quarter Summit was still behind 32-35.
The final quarter was all Summit. Bruce scored early,
then after a Chatham field goal Katie Tully scored and
it was a 1 point game. Karen Jann hit to give Summit the
lead for the first time since early in the 1st quarter. Free
throws by Bruce and DanielleProper were followed
a field goal from each of these seniors. Suddenly Summit was
ahead by 7 points. Down the stretch, Bruce (with 2) and
Proper (with 4) sank six straight free throws. Between
the two they delivered 14 points in the 4th quarter. The game
started with Summit scoring the first 8 points from Proper
and Bruce, and they made it look very easy. It seemed
like it might be a blowout. However, Chatham quickly made it
clear the fans were wrong. Chatham outscored Summit 19-10 during
the remainder of the first half.
Even though she played only about 16 minutes of the game Stephanie
Bruce led the scoring with 18 points . It is hard to overestimate
her impact when she came back into the game with 3 minutes left
in the 3rd quarter. Danielle Proper added 16 points.
Summit plays the winner of the Jefferson-Mendham game on Tueday
at Rahway (6PM). |
